Ngamoni Huata

Tūhourangi-Ngāti Wāhiao, Tūhoe, Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Whare.
Joined the exhibition in Rotorua, in May 2023.

Ngamoni is an older wāhine with short red pixie hair visible under a short-brimmed hat black fedora with a black-white and red pattered band in contemporary Māori style. Her eyes and brows are defined with dark eye liner and she looks out at us.

Ngamoni fondly reminisces about her childhood in the Whakarewarewa village, where she developed a deep connection to the river and the whenua.

Reflecting on her life journey with gratitude and aroha, she shares insightful perspectives on navigating life’s challenges and her love for people.

We mourn the loss of Ngamoni Huata who sadly passed away on the 1st of January 2024. May she Rest In Peace.

PHOTO PORTRAIT DESCRIPTION

Ngamoni is an older wāhine with short red pixie hair visible under a short-brimmed hat black fedora with a black-white and red pattered band in contemporary Māori style.

Her eyes and brows are defined with dark eye liner and she looks out at us with a confident gaze, her smiling mouth slightly open showing even white top teeth. Her lips are filled in with dark ink matching her bold moko kauae with strong lines and spirals with the mangopare or hammerhead shark design facing upwards.

She is wearing a long-sleeved dark top spangled with silver. She is adorned with a Māori cloak or korowai that has panels of mixed short brown and white feathers and alternating panels of black tassels. It covers her chest, flows over her left shoulder and beneath her right arm. Around her neck attached to a long thin black cord lies a large wooden hei tiki with paua shell eyes that sits upright over the korowai.

Behind Ngamoni is a wooden panel background with Māori contemporary carved wooden art visible behind her right shoulder.
