Maria Aroha Morgan

Joined the exhibition in Invercargill in November 2021.

Maria Aroha has lived and breathed marae life since she was a young girl. Contemplating her role at Te Rau Aroha Marae today, she shares the importance of manaaki, acknowledgment, and self-care.

She offers an honest and sensitive reflection on the search for who we are, our place and our identity, and how becoming a woman is a lifetime journey.

Mali has long straight brown hair brushed back from her face and hanging over both shoulders. Her body is tilted away from us, but her head is turned with lips lightly closed and eyes angled left to look right at us. She has a moko kauae with curves and koru patterns.

Her shoulders are draped in a heavy black and grey shawl and in the background are complex woven tukutuku panels surrounded by red,black and white frames decorated in Māori designs.
